Ghaziabad Name Change: Proposal to Alter the District's Name Given During Mughal Rule

Ghaziabad Name Change: The district, known for almost 284 years by the name associated with Mughal minister Ghaziuddin, is set for a transformation. In a municipal board meeting on Tuesday, the proposal received approval, and it will now be forwarded to the government for further consideration.

The new name for the district has not been decided yet. However, the municipal corporation is likely to suggest a name based on the history of Ghaziabad for government approval.

Ghaziabad became separate from Meerut in 1976.

In the year 1740, during the Mughal rule, the minister Ghaziuddin established a city called Ghaziuddin Nagar, which was later shortened to Ghaziabad. On November 14, 1976, the then Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari declared Ghaziabad as a separate district from Meerut, but the name remained unchanged.

The name of Allahabad has been changed to Prayagraj.

After the Yogi government came into power in Uttar Pradesh and changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj, demands for renaming Ghaziabad also started emerging. Hindu organizations and representatives, along with lawmakers, urged the state government to change the name of Ghaziabad. Letters were also sent to the government regarding this matter.

Proposal for Name Change Passed by Municipality

There is also a demand to change the district's name to Doodheshwar Nagar. The matter was initially discussed in the Municipal Corporation, but Tuesday became a significant day when this proposal was brought to the Municipal Corporation by Ward Number-100 councilor Sanjay Singh. He suggested changing the name of Ghaziabad to Gajnagar or Harnandi Nagar.

Proposal to be Sent to the Government

As discussions began on this matter, the majority of councilors were in favor. Executive Vice President Rajeev Sharma stated that this proposal should come directly from the Mayor, and Mayor, before presenting the proposal to change the name of Ghaziabad in front of the council, stated that the decision to change the district's name needs to be made by the government, and the new name should also be determined by the government.

The councilors passed the Mayor's proposal with a majority vote. Chants of 'Victory to Mother India' echoed in the council upon the approval of the proposal. Mayor Sunita Dayal mentioned that the proposal will be sent to the government soon.
