Delhi Schools' Winter Break 2024: Closure of Classes Up to Grade 5 for the Next 5 Days Due to Cold Weather
Cold Weather Forces Closure of Delhi Schools up to Class 5 for the Next 5 Days
Due to the chilly weather conditions, Delhi schools up to class 5 will be closed for the next 5 days.
Earlier, the Delhi government issued a directive to extend the winter vacation in schools across the national capital. However, this decision was swiftly reversed shortly after its issuance. The Department of Education clarified that the initial order, which prolonged the winter break, was a mistake. The decision on this matter was originally scheduled for January 8.
The updated order stated, "Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024, regarding the extension of Winter Vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Further instructions on this matter may be issued in due course," as reported by ANI.
In a prior directive, the Arvind Kejriwal government extended the winter break until January 10 for all government-aided and unaided recognized private schools in the National Capital Territory (NCT), citing 'extreme cold waves and IMD's yellow alert.
Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced, Primary schools in Delhi, up to class 5th, will remain closed for another week. Schools for class 6th upwards will reopen, but clear instructions have been given for schools not to operate before 8 am and after 5 pm.
On January 6, Delhi experienced overcast and foggy conditions, impacting the residents. The daytime recorded a maximum temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius, while the early morning low dipped to 8.9 degrees.
Chilly Weather
Delhi experienced cold conditions as the national capital registered a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius on January 2, slightly above the usual. Earlier, Delhi had recorded a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
According to RWFC Delhi, dense to very dense fog was anticipated at isolated locations, leading to cold day to severe cold day conditions in a few places in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until January 7.
Commencement of Winter Break Ahead of Schedule
The Delhi government declared an early winter break for schools in November, extending from the 9th to the 18th, due to the "severe" levels of air pollution.
"In consideration of the air pollution, the winter break for all schools in December has been rescheduled and will now be observed from November 9 to 18," stated the notice.
