Despicable Me 4 release date

It's been two years since the blockbuster success of "Minions: The Rise of Gru" in 2022, but the wait for another adventure with the beloved pill-shaped heroes is almost over. "Despicable Me 4" is set to premiere in theaters this July, promising another star-studded journey with Gru and his Minion companions.

Picking up after the events of "Despicable Me 3" (note that the "Minions" films serve as prequels), the storyline follows Steve Carrell's Gru and Kristen Wiig's Lucy as their family expands with the introduction of Gru Jr. Alongside the familiar characters, the film introduces two new antagonists: Maxime Le Mal (played by Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale partner Valentina (portrayed by Sofia Vergara).

While Universal's Illumination Entertainment has achieved tremendous success with hits like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Migration," the "Despicable Me" franchise remains the prized jewel in its collection. Despite the franchise's box office dominance, recent entries haven't consistently impressed critics.

Critics, such as Kate Erbland from IndieWire, have expressed concerns about the franchise losing its charm for its target audience. In her review of "Despicable Me 3," Erbland remarked, "It’s clear from the opening minutes of 'Despicable Me 3' that the popular Illumination Entertainment franchise has lost the thread on what makes the series so appealing to its target audience (you know, kids). If 'Despicable Me' wants to avoid the pitfalls (and pratfalls) of its latest bad guy’s own misbegotten entertainment career, the series is going to have to dig much deeper than bad jokes about Michael Jackson’s discography and an off-key subplot involving teen marriages dictated by actual cheese. Even the Minions deserve better than this."

Despite the criticisms, the anticipation for "Despicable Me 4" remains high. The film, a Universal release, is scheduled to hit theaters on Friday, July 3. For a sneak peek, check out the trailer below.
