Individual Arrested and Granted Bail After Assaulting IndiGo Pilot Following a 13-Hour Flight Delay.
Fog Warning: Delay on IndiGo Flight (6E-2175) from Delhi to Goa Caused by Extended Fog Conditions Leads to Incident.
A passenger on an IndiGo flight physically attacked the pilot while he was announcing delays. The incident occurred on the delayed IndiGo flight (6E-2175) from Delhi to Goa, which was held up for hours due to fog on Sunday. The identified passenger, Sahil Kataria, was taken into custody and later released on bail.
In a video circulating on social media, a man in a yellow hoodie suddenly approached from the back and struck Anup Kumar, the flight's co-captain. Anup Kumar had taken over the crew responsibilities in adherence to Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations after prolonged delays.
FDTL, or Flight Duty Time Limitations, are regulations designed to safeguard the health and well-being of pilots and flight attendants. These rules mandate sufficient rest periods and aim to address safety concerns related to fatigue. The Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) holds the responsibility for setting and enforcing these regulations.
Immediately following the incident, the passenger was swiftly removed from the aircraft and turned over to the authorities.
One individual expressed their frustration on social media, questioning the rationale behind blaming the pilot or cabin crew for the flight delay, emphasizing that they were simply carrying out their duties. The user called for the arrest of the assailant, urging authorities to add him to the no-fly list. Additionally, they suggested publishing the person's photo to alert the public about his disruptive behavior.
Another commenter condemned the passenger's actions, advocating for legal consequences such as assault charges and inclusion in a No Fly List. While acknowledging concerns about IndiGo's recent negative publicity, they asserted that the passenger's behavior was entirely unacceptable.
The incident occurred amidst widespread disruptions at the Delhi airport, with as many as 110 flights facing delays and 79 flights being canceled on the same day, as reported by the flight tracking website flightradar24. The average delay reached 50 minutes, further contributing to the mounting frustration of passengers already dealing with extensive flight disruptions.
Yesterday, numerous flights to and from the Delhi airport encountered significant delays, with some surpassing seven or eight hours. The primary cause for these disruptions was adverse weather conditions, specifically dense fog, prevalent in North India. Major airlines, including IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Vistara, have issued warnings, stating that the persisting bad weather conditions in Delhi and Kolkata might continue to adversely affect flight schedules.
