What a way to kick off the new year!
A lone Powerball ticket sold in Michigan matched all six numbers in Monday's drawing, securing the estimated $842.4 million jackpot, as announced by the lottery. This marks the first time the jackpot has been won on New Year's Day since the game's inception in 1992.
The winning numbers – 12, 21, 42, 44, 49, and the red Powerball 1 – led to this remarkable victory, with a 3x power play multiplier.
The fortunate ticket was purchased at the Food Castle of Grand Blanc in Grand Blanc, just south of Flint, according to the Michigan Lottery. The jackpot winner is advised to get in touch with the Michigan Lottery’s player relations division to claim their substantial prize.
Now, the ticket owner faces a significant decision: they can either opt for an annuitized prize of $842.4 million or choose a lump sum of $425.2 million (both amounts are pre-tax). If the winner goes for the full prize, they will receive an immediate payment, followed by 29 annual payments, each increasing by five percent annually. What a life-changing start to the new year!

The initial estimate for the jackpot was $810 million, but final sales pushed the figure up by over $30 million. This win now stands as the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot ever claimed and the 10th-largest lottery jackpot in the United States. Notably, it is the second-largest jackpot ever won in Michigan, with the only higher amount being a $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot in 2021.
The streak without a Powerball winner lasted since October 11, 2023, when a ticket in California hit the incredible $1.76 billion jackpot. Monday's drawing marked the 35th one since that notable win.
In addition to the jackpot winner, there were four tickets sold in California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maryland that secured $1 million prizes by matching all five white balls from Monday's drawing. Furthermore, two tickets sold in Florida and Texas won $2 million prizes by matching all five white balls and opting for the power play option.
Beyond these significant wins, seven tickets claimed $150,000 prizes, and 42 tickets won $50,000 prizes.
