Mohammed Shami Honored with Arjuna Award by President Droupadi Murmu.
Shami, a key player in the Indian teams that reached the finals of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup, impressively took 24 wickets in just seven World Cup matches last year.
On Tuesday, India's pace leader, Mohammed Shami, was among the athletes recognized with the Arjuna Award, an annual honor for exceptional achievements in sports. Shami played a pivotal role in the Indian team that reached the finals of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup. At 33, he emerged as the top wicket-taker in the World Cup hosted in India, securing an impressive 24 wickets in just seven matches.
Sharing a video from the award ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on social media, Shami expressed his pride, saying, Today, I feel incredibly proud to receive the esteemed Arjuna Award from the President. I want to express my gratitude to all those who have supported me throughout my journey, helping me through both the highs and lows.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to my coach, BCCI, teammates, my family, staff, and a big shoutout to my fans. I appreciate the acknowledgment of my hard work. I will always strive to give my best to bring pride to my country," he emphasized.
In addition to Mohammed Shami, other awardees included wrestler Antim Panghal, a former junior world champion and senior event bronze-medalist, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin, who secured bronze at last year's world championship, and athlete Parul Chaudhary.
Shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty received the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award for their outstanding performance in 2023. They achieved notable milestones, winning their maiden Asian Games gold (a historic moment for India in badminton), as well as claiming the Asian Championships title and the Indonesia Open Super 1000 title.
