Table Of Content:
2024 marks a decade since the very first OnePlus phone, and the brand is marking the occasion with a new flagship phone.
The OnePlus 12 is now official in China, and we now have a confirmed global launch date for the handset.
And assuming the specs are the same elsewhere, it looks set to rival the very best smartphones you can buy.
What is the release date for the OnePlus 12?
The OnePlus 12 was officially launched in China on 4 December 2023, and went on sale on 11 December 2023.
However, we’ll have to wait a little longer for it to arrive elsewhere. OnePlus has confirmed that it plans to launch the OnePlus 12 in global markets on 23 January 2024 at 2 pm GMT.
OnePlus has also confirmed that the OnePlus R series will go on sale for the first time outside of China and India – the 12R was spotted a little while ago on Singapore’s IMDA certification program (via The Tech Outlook).
This is the launch event, so it may be a few weeks before the phones hit shelves – we’ll likely find out when the announcement happens.
The global release of the OnePlus 12 is set slightly earlier compared to its predecessor, the OnePlus 11, which debuted globally in February 2023 after its initial launch in China a month earlier.
Contrary to previous models, there will be no OnePlus 12 Pro variant. OnePlus has officially stated to Android Authority that the Pro line has been discontinued permanently.
What is the price of the OnePlus 12?
As of now, the pricing details for the OnePlus 12 are available only for the Chinese market:
- 12GB/256GB – CNY 4,299 (approximately £480/$605)
- 16GB/512GB – CNY 4,799 (approximately £535/$680)
- 16GB/1TB – CNY 5,299 (approximately £590/$750)
- 24GB/1TB – CNY 5,799 (approximately £650/$820)
It's important to note that the UK and US figures mentioned above are direct conversions based on early bird pricing, and they are subject to change.
Instead, anticipate a pricing structure similar to the OnePlus 11 at its initial release:
- 8GB/128GB – £729/$699
- 16GB/256GB – £799/$799
Notably, neither of these configurations is currently offered in China. It remains to be seen if OnePlus will maintain this distinction for the global model or if there could be a potential price adjustment.
What Specifications and Features Can Be Expected from the OnePlus 12?
While the OnePlus 12's global unveiling is pending, the recent launch in China provides substantial insights into its features.
Starting with the design, there are no significant surprises. Images shared on the official OnePlus Weibo account, displayed below, reveal a striking resemblance to the OnePlus 11.
The device features a textured back, with variations depending on the selected color. The glossy green and matte black options are making a comeback, although the availability of the glossy white model outside of China remains uncertain.
In terms of official color names, the OnePlus China launch page, translated by Google, provides some amusing results. It has been revealed that the green model will be officially named 'Flowy Emerald.'
The primary alteration in design involves relocating the traditional alert slider from the right to the left side. Although seemingly subtle, OnePlus emphasizes its significance by asserting that this shift optimizes antenna placement, resulting in improved performance. According to the company, this adjustment contributes to a 3dB enhancement in signal strength and a 15% reduction in gaming latency.
Regarding performance, the OnePlus 12 runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm's most potent chipset for smartphones. In China, consumers can choose from configurations with 12GB, 16GB, or 24GB of RAM. However, it remains plausible that the global version might retain the 8GB or 16GB options seen in the OnePlus 11.
Likewise, the storage options of 128GB or 256GB might persist, although there is hope for expanded choices like 512GB or 1TB, particularly considering the absence of support for expandable storage.
There were no substantial display changes as rumored, but a few distinctions are notable. Firstly, the panel size has increased to 6.82 inches from 6.7 inches. This results in a slightly higher resolution of 1440×3168, maintaining a 120Hz OLED with LTPO technology capable of automatically adjusting down to 1Hz.
The inclusion of LTPO technology aids in preserving battery life, complemented by the enhanced 5400mAh capacity, up from 5000mAh. The device still retains the impressive 100W wired charging capability, and now introduces wireless charging at 50W, along with reverse wireless charging at 10W, at least on the Chinese version.
Now turning to the cameras, the primary rear lens remains at 50MP, but it has undergone an upgrade to an f/1.6 sensor. This is accompanied by an improved 64MP telephoto lens with an f/2.6 aperture and a subtly tweaked 48MP ultrawide lens.
If the sample shots already circulating online are any indication, it appears to be a highly capable camera phone.
The selfie lens has also undergone upgrades, doubling its megapixel count to 32MP with a slightly adjusted f/2.4 focal length.
On the software front, the OnePlus 12 will come equipped with OnePlus' OxygenOS 14 skin layered over Android 14.
Although OnePlus hasn't explicitly detailed the support duration, it is likely to align with the OnePlus 11, offering four years of Android version updates and five years of security updates. If this holds true, it would extend support through a potential Android 18 and up to 2028.
We will provide updates as more information about the OnePlus 12 becomes available. In the meantime, explore our top picks for the best Android phones and best OnePlus phones to discover other options in the market.
