The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday that the schedule for this year's T20 World Cup, to be held in the United States and the West Indies, has been the most complex ever created. The tournament will feature a record 20 teams, an increase from the 16 teams in the previous 2022 edition, and will take place at nine different venues across North America. One of the notable venues is a newly unveiled stadium in Nassau County, New York, with a seating capacity of 34,000.

The ICC chose New York as a host city due to the large number of cricket fans in the area. The stadium in Long Island will stage eight matches during the World Cup, including the highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan on June 9. Although the stadium will be temporary and feature drop-in pitches, it will not have floodlights.

Chris Tetley, the ICC's Head of Events, expressed excitement about bringing the tournament to New York, stating that the venue will host some of the most eagerly awaited cricket matches, potentially including the most highly anticipated match of all. Tetley made these comments during an online media roundtable.

I anticipate a packed venue and an atmosphere reminiscent of the excitement seen in the World Cup. While we consider the time of day, our focus remains on presenting world-class cricket with the participation of the finest players. They are set to deliver an outstanding performance at a venue of international standards.

The USA is set to kick off the tournament against Canada on June 1 in Dallas, and the West Indies will commence their campaign against Papua New Guinea in Guyana. The final showdown is scheduled for June 29 in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Tetley commented on the complexity of the tournament schedule, stating, In my experience, drafting the match schedule for this tournament has been the most complicated ever. The sheer number of matches and participating teams make it the largest T20 World Cup to date.

Discussing Cricket Over Breakfast on Chat Shows

Indian websites have posted match timings between 1400 and 1600 GMT to accommodate subcontinent fans, although Tetley mentioned that the finalization of fixtures is still pending.

He stated, "The start times for the matches haven't been released yet."

Reflecting on the T20 World Cup, Tetley sees it as a fantastic opportunity to tap into the interest in the United States. With the successful hosting of its own T20 franchise league, Major League Cricket, last year, including MI New York winning the inaugural title, he added, "I see it as an amazing opportunity to harness the interest that exists within the US."

Tetley also highlighted the growing curiosity about cricket in the United States, saying, "What is this thing called cricket that’s now being played in my backyard? Major League Cricket got a bit of interest in its first season. World Cup cricket coming to New York has been featured in breakfast chat shows that would never have happened not so long ago."

The New York stadium, designed by Populous, the company behind iconic venues like Yankee Stadium in New York and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, is one of nine venues for the tournament, with six located in the Caribbean and Florida serving as the third base in the United States.
