In Season 1, the live-action adaptation is set to kick off its narrative, bringing to life the events from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. The animated series originally aired on Nickelodeon for three seasons starting in 2005. It went on to inspire the sequel show, The Legend of Korra, as well as various companion pieces, including comics and video games.

In a fantastical realm drawing inspiration from ancient Asian and indigenous cultures, individuals known as benders possess the extraordinary power to manipulate one of four natural elements: water, earth, fire, and air. However, the Avatar, a being reincarnated once in a lifecycle, holds the unique ability to harness all four elements to ensure harmony in the world. Aang, a young air bender, is the designated next Avatar. However, he has mysteriously disappeared for a century, leaving the Fire Nation to wage a war for global dominance in his absence.

With Aang making a comeback, his journey towards mastering the remaining elements and bringing peace to the world hinges on the support of his newfound companions. These include Katara, a water bender portrayed by Kiawentiio, and her brother Sokka, played by Ian Ousley, both from the Southern Water Tribe. Alongside them is Dallas Liu, taking on the role of Prince Zuko, determined to locate the Avatar and hand him over to his father, Fire Lord Ozai, played by Daniel Dae Kim.

The trailer gives a glimpse of the day when the Fire Nation eradicated the Air Nomads, a significant event not explicitly portrayed in the original series. Albert Kim, the showrunner, had hinted earlier about several other changes that viewers can expect in the live-action adaptation.

In an interview with EW, Kim mentioned, "We don't begin the show the same way the animated series does. It was a deliberate choice to convey that this is not a replication of the animated series. At times, we had to untangle storylines and rearrange them to fit the structure of a serialized drama. I'm intrigued to see how people will react to these changes.

The release date for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" on Netflix is set for February 22. Check out the trailer above for a sneak peek.
